Cut It Out -Campaign to End Domestic Violence @ Em...

The goal of CUT IT OUT is to build awareness of domestic violence through posters and brochures displayed in salons. Salon professionals will also be trained to recognize warning signs and safely refer clients to get help. The Arizona Coalition Against Domestic Violence will conduct training sessions at Arizona's 43 cosmetology schools and hair shows. The Empire Education Group has adopted the CUT IT OUT Program nationwide to support this effort by educating its own students to recognize signs of domestic abuse and safely refer those clients to people and resources that can help them. The CUT IT OUT training sessions will be taught in each of Empires nine schools in Arizona by representatives from the Arizona Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

Walt Fisher Lecture: A. Cheree Carlson...

March 26, 2009: Walt Fisher Lecture: A. Cheree Carlson, Arizona State University Join communication school director Larry Gross for the annual Walt Fisher Lecture, honoring emeritus professor and former communication school director Walt Fisher. This lecture will be given by A. Cheree Carlson, communication professor at Arizona State University and author of the 2009 book, The Crimes of Womanhood : Defining Femininity in a Court of Law. Her topic: Narrative border crossings: Womanhood as asset and liability in the trial of Lizzie Andrew Borden. From Carlson: As Walter Fisher has so ably demonstrated, stories are everywhere, even where we least expect them. These stories subtly alter our perspective on truth and affect many of the decisions we make on a daily basis. Our case in point is the trial of Lizzie Borden (1895) for allegedly axe murdering her father and step-mother. The case is still used today as a touchstone of nineteenth century gender norms - a murderer getting away with it because men could not be convinced that a woman was capable of a brutal slaying. It will soon become evident, however, that on rhetorical grounds, the response to that facile summary is yesbut its more complicated than that.

Celebrate Arizona! is a unique and innovate way to teach fourth graders at Ward Traditional Academy about the several cultures and time periods of Arizonas history. Each year the students produce and perform a 35-minute musical incorporating social studies and the musical elements. Using their Arizona history text as a guide, the children learn about Native Americans, Spanish culture, pioneers and mining. While learning history and preparing for the musical, students helped create dances and learned some sign language that coincided with musical numbers, musical elements and instruments.
