dangerous, I live 6 hours from there, and we see what most dont outside Az. check the arizona travel and tourism sites. it use to be a small town, but you cant tell where phoenix stops and tuscon starts.
Nasty hot in the Summer but with very low humidity, which helps the comfort level. “Monsoon” season is in the Winter, which means that when it rains, it comes down hard and fast, resulting in flash floods and roads often washed out with underpasses filling up dangerously deep. They have built a pretty good canal system, which keeps the problems to a minimum, but no amount of city engineering can beat Mother Nature.
Meanwhile, it is a fairly large, cosmopolitan city with all the big city ameneties. Lots of recreation (except for snow) and the outdoor scenery is spectacular. The Arizona capitol, Phoenix is an hour and a half North and the Mexico border town of Nogales is an hour to the South. The artist colony of Tubac is in between. Old Tucson is a kind of “Old West” tourist trap, but picturesque, nonetheless. For me, I enjoyed more visiting the Desert Wildlife Museum, just outside of town.
Don’t know much about the college.
“castlebrookgift” may be confusing Tucson with Tempe. There is a LOT of desert between Phoenix and Tucson.
Hi! I live in Tucson. I have been here all of my life. Live about 10-15 minutes away from the U. Tucson is a big town with a fairly small town feel. It feels old here. We have many historical sites. We have a funky downtown area. Lots of cool shops, lots of funky bars and cafes. There is a great local music scene. Tucsonans are crazy about the Wildcats! We have Wildcat Fever, so to speak. It’s def. a college town. There is a really cool campus. The surrounding residentail neighborhood is lovely. Called the Sam Hughes District. There is a trolley running through some of the downtown area and there are public buses, however those arent great. We have lots of great outdoor attractions, swimming, hiking, skiing, you name it. We even have Rocky Point Mexico and the beach about 2 hours away. There is plenty of good shopping and it’s getting fancier everyday. We have many high-end boutiques on the Northside of town. A home recently sold here for 8 million dollars, so there is def. money. But, there is a completely different side too. We are very close to Mexico, so many residents speak Spanish. You won’t ever have a hard time finding good mexican food. We have lots of good food from all cuisines actually! Even five diamond fine dining. We have several famous resorts, beautiful sunsets, and nice weather if you can take the heat. Bring your sunscreen!
Edit:
Vance, Monsoon is not in the winter in Tucson. It is in the late summer. Usually about August. The storms are awsome. One of my fav time of year. Yes, potentially dangerous if you attempt to drive through a running wash, but youde have to be dumb. We are famous for our lightening. Apparently we have just the right geographical set up to encourage cool lightening shows. The rain during monsoon is warm. The skies look really cool- purple, pink, and blues. We had snow last year on Jan. 22, 2007 at ground level, not the mountains.
Tucson contains the US’s southern most “Sky Island” aka Mt. Lemmon. Called this because of the hugh demographical change that takes place from desert on the bottom, to high desert, and all the way at the top, pine forrest. 30 min drive from mid town.
I was stationed for a very short time just outside of Tucson. During the winter months it is awesome. The weather is perfect. Someone said dangerous, but I had nothing but fun in Tucson and it is close to the Mexican border so you can cross over and get some neat stuff.
Tucson is hardly “dangerous” – the most dangerous thing you will have to worry about is a sunstroke if you stay out in the sun too long in the summer. Also, the person that said Phoenix and Tucson are now connected has never been there! There are almost 120 miles between the two cities!! They are nowhere near connected!!
Its a great college town and the University of Arizona is a great school! Great academic programs and also has some good athletic traditions.
Here is some info on the city of Tucson:

Good luck – you will love being a Wildcat!!
